And such is my life these days...
Oct. 16th, 2006 08:31 pmFirst, it's Computer TV commercials through the ages!. Well, OK, "the ages" being 1981 and up, but still. And speaking of 1981, one of the commercials features William Shatner, fresh off the set of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.
You know, I actually remember some of these. I especially like the Commodore 64 "Buy our computer or your kid will flunk out of college" one, as the first job I had in college was lab assistant in the Commodore 64 lab. A job which, by the way, I got because of my experience playing Lode Runner on my friend's C64. I was an Apple II fan myself at the time.
In other news, while digging through a drawer, I found Tape 2 of Star Wars: The Radio Drama. Wow! I remember this thing as a child, listening to it as it was coming out (1979). I recorded it off the air using the tried and true "set the tape player next to the radio speaker" method so common to those of my generation whose parents couldn't (or wouldn't) afford the $500+ to get one of those fancy radios with a tape recorder built right in to it. Sadly, I leant my copy to a friend who got bored with it and recorded over it all with the KGW Morning Show. Bastard.
Back to the tape, though - it doesn't say out of how many - and I don't remember ever owning the show on tape (other than what I found) (I wanna go find it now!). I seem to recall it being 13 parts, each half an hour long. In this tape, containing parts two and three, we get from the attack on the Tantive IV (pronounced, by the way, TAN-ti-vee), all the way up to Luke discovering that R2D2 has run off. In an hour. Yeah, I definitely want to find the rest of this series now.
reynard52: do you have these tapes?
I just wonder what the heck the FIRST two episodes were! The original scene with Biggs and Luke, perhaps? Something else?
And, speaking of Star Wars, I also found amongst my library, which has been in various boxes for the last few years, Han Solo at Stars' End and, as a moment of important historical truth (remember, this book was written in 1978, when Star Wars was a movie, not a franchise, and Lucas hadn't even though of redoing it yet) anyway, the following bit of conversation takes place at the very beginning of Chapter VI:
"I happen to like to shoot first"
I'm just sayin'.
(Apropos of nothing, Brian Daley was the author both of the Han Solo books and of the Star Wars Radio drama.)

Rekkon interposed himself between Han and Chewbacca and the door. "Kindly put your weapons up, Captin. That is Torm, one of my group. Even if it weren't would it not have been wiser to find out what was happening before preparing to shoot?"
Han made a sour face. "I happen to like to shoot first, Rekkon. As opposed to shooting second."
