Iraq

So, Saddam Hussein is found guilty. Two days before the elections in the U.S. Gee, what an unexpected coincidence.

Bush, of course, hailed this as yet another major milestone. Perhaps, even, a turning point? How long has it been since the mission was accomplished over there?

Do I think he deserves death? Sure. The man was slime, and was known as the "Butcher of Baghdad" long before our PR agencies started to attack him. Do I think the trial was Fair and Balanced? Not a chance. I think a lot of people in Iraq are aware of the inevitable verdict, and the timing is not lost on them any more than on us. Leave it to George W. Bush to make a hero and, now, a martyr, out of a murderous warlord who seized power of a nation.

Yeah, he's a bastard, but we knew that back in the 80's while we were supporting him. Perhaps, next time, we should take a bit of look at the character of the guy we put into power somewhere, huh? Of course, if he had any character he wouldn't have accepted help from the CIA to take over Iraq in the first place.

So, a couple years back, after hundreds of reports of mistreatment, humiliation, and torture of the POWs we'd captured had been summarily dismissed by our military, someone smuggle out photographic evidence that at least some of these reports were true.

Rumsfield, of course, showing the bold leadership that makes him so popular with the current regime, immediately reacted to the scandal: by banning cameras from our POW camps. Especially the secret ones whose existence was denied repeatedly before they were admitted in a mostly successful attempt to distract everyone from the new Enabling Act.

And now, after repeated embarassment caused by massive ongoing corruption on the part of Cheney's friends at Haliburton and elsewhere, as the military auditing office finds yet more wrongdoing, they again react with the same bold maneuver: They've shut down the auditor's office.

I'm so glad that these clowns are such moral and godly men, or else I might think they're up to no good as they seize more and more power with less and less accountability.

We'll see if anything changes on Tuesday, I guess.
