Republican House - a good beginning
Dec. 31st, 2010 04:11 pmYes, my very first post about the new Republicans in the House is going to be one of whole-hearted agreement with their very first agenda item.
And what might that item be, you may ask? They want to start off the Congressional session with a reading of the Constitution. The whole thing. All 4,543 words of it.
I think this is a great idea. I think Congress should start off every session by reading the Constitution.
I think this should be done live on CSPAN at a time that's convenient for every classroom in every school in America to watch and listen to them do it.
I think that there's going to be some surprises for some people in it. For instance, did you know that slavery is officially endorsed in the U.S. Constitution, and that free Black people only count as 3/5 of a person for representation, but aren't allowed to vote? They fixed that in later amendments - the 13th outlawed slavery, and the 14th made Black people full citizens. (The latter one is one of the ones that the Tea Party wants to repeal, by the way, just so you know.)
There will be other surprises in the reading, too, I think. Many will be surprises to those who are supporting the reading of it. As usual Slacktivist Blog does a much better job that I could of pointing them out.
But, in short - good job Republican leadership. I'm glad your first act in office is something that I can give you my full support on!
