Story idea
Aug. 16th, 2018 02:23 pmStarts out typical heroic fantasy - world is threatened by some great evil. Evil wizard, mad tyrant, unleashed demon, rising god, whatever.
Our stalwart heroes band together to seek out a legendary hero to stop it. After he stopped some other great evil decades ago, he's retired to some remote mountain retreat or lonely island or something.
They find the place he's reported to live and find it empty. They find clues to where he might have gone, and follow up on them, slowly tracing his route and uncovering the horrible knowledge his motives in doing so.
In the end discover that the great hero is now actually the horrible evil they originally set out to defeat.
Could go a couple of ways there, or perhaps both, in succession: They realize only they can fight him, and spend the rest of the book doing so. Or they discover that all the horrible things he's doing is because it's the only way he can prevent something even more horrible and evil from happening. Or, if you want that kind of story: they despair, realize they can't fight him, fall to fighting themselves and some decide to join him and others decide to die in a vain fight against him and the world falls to eternal darkness.
