Speaking of Stargate...

"You bastard! You ended that sentence... in... a preposition!"
OK, maybe you had to be there.
I'm up to Season 6.

Date: 2006-08-23 10:21 pm (UTC)"Enter the name that correspondence will be addressed to."
Which ends a sentence in a preposition.
OR
“Enter the name to which correspondence will be addressed.”
Which uses a “which” and violates the right-branching-sentence rule.
OR
“Enter the name to whom correspondence will be addressed.”
Which uses an archaism (whom).
I could ditch the archaism and say:
“Enter the name to who correspondence will be addressed.”
But that just sounds wrong. Besides, “whom” is really only an archaism when it doesn’t follow a preposition.
And yes, nudnik, I know that it should be “Enter the name of the PERSON to whom correspondence will be addressed.” But that’s just way too many words. And its not conveying the correct information. The correspondence might be going to a different person, the question is, whose name appears on the envelope.
