Yeah, I know, it's been like forever since a real post.

Happy new year, everybody!

Let's see, where to start.

My contract with the state ended. I was working for the Oregon Department of Corrections, writing their Software Configuration Management Plan. After I finished, the head of all of IT for the Department of Corrections finally saw it and raised two issues with it. One, she wanted a detailed backout method for deploys to production that fail. Never mind that there are three steps in the flow chart, which link to three paragraphs, under the title "Backout Method for Failed Deploys to Production". Guess what's under that paragraph? Her other issue was with the scope of the document. I limited it to all new Java-based development, especially the CIS Re-Write Project. The fact that the name of the document, for two and a half months, was "CIS Re-Write Project Software Configuration Management Plan" did not apparently clue anybody in to the fact that that was my intention. Nor did the original outline that started with "The scope of this document will be limited to the CIS Re-Write Project, and applicable to all new Java-based development." And the two sentences in which I described the specific reasons we had chosen to not address either the legacy AS400 system or ad-hoc Visual Basic based projects apparently were not enough to clue her in to the fact that we weren't planning on addressing those. So, yeah, if you live in Oregon, they just spent roughly 50,000 of your tax dollars writing a 30 page document for a woman who can't read.

Oh, well, she really doesn't have anything to do with software development, anyway, so they'll probably still use the plan, since they need to use something and frankly it's a damn good SCM plan.

But I don't really care that much.

In other news, I have broken up with my girlfriend. I miss her, although I do still think it was for the best. It all came down to differing expectations. We were close, and this is the first time I've ever actually discussed marriage as an actual possibility with someone. But it didn't work out.

I'm sad, I miss her sometimes, but it's good, and that's really all I want to say about that here.

Still haven't gotten a chance to go diving yet since I moved here, though I hope to soon. Still in Aikido. It's getting easier. I can get through an entire hour class now without being totally worn out and in excrutiating pain. The acupuncturist I've been seeing has a lot to do with that, I think. It's very strange, and I can't figure out how it works. I can't feel the needles doing anything, but can tell afterward that they do. Maybe it's just a matter of irritating the muscles properly so that they're more relaxed afterward, I dunno. After the last session, after she pulled the needles out of my legs, it felt sorta charged - like I could feel an energy field flowing over them, starting from just above the knees and waterfalling down to the ground. Weird and mystical crap. Whatever the hell it does, though, it worked. Next day at Aikido, despite the extensive knee work that day, there was no pain at all after class, and only a little bit the next day.

Updating my resume, and looking for a new contract now. So, that's always fun (Not!). Other than that, not much else going on.

Oh, yeah, and I'm back in Eugene for a while. I'm gonna confine my job search to this state, at least for the first couple of months.
