I sent this to the mailing list yesterday. For those here, but not on the list, here is:

Geeks Without Borders News

April 27th, 2004

Norwescon 27:

First, the great news: Our trip to Norwescon was a stunning success. We made a lot of new contacts, begun set up for two new avenues for donation: both through corporate matching gifts from their employees. We also got many promises and many leads for future hardware donations, which is our biggest need right now. Cash-wise, we brought in $1042 from selling T-shirts and cookies, and dragging around a Giant Bucket for people to throw their spare change into. As before, all expenses for Norwescon were paid by the participants, so all the proceeds go directly to GWoB. Special thanks to the Cult of Scott Bakula for spreading the word of GWoB (along with that of Scott Bakula), and to all our new (and old) volunteers who dressed up as GWoB Scouts to raise awareness. And welcome to all who signed up for our mailing list at the convention!

Nerd Ball 2:

Then there's Nerd Ball. We were able to raise almost $300.00 in one night at our second benefit concert. Four bands donated their time and their talents, so very special thanks to:

Upcoming projects:

We still have not heard from our main contact in Chiapas. The situation there is still intense, with 35 wounded in an ambush about 10 miles outside of San Cristòbal earlier this month. In light of this, we are putting our plans to deliver a network of computers to a school in that region on hold, at least until we can make direct contact to better assist the situation.

We are also still waiting to hear about the status of a land-line for Esperanza Para Los Niños, the children's home in Sonora at which we set up a network of five computers last month. We are planning on re-visiting them for additional training and connection to the internet.

We also have another project, a school for disabled children, in which we hope to be helping out this summer. This will be in Mexico, and I'll have more details shortly.

We are still waiting to hear from one avenue, and simultaneously seeking additional sources for shipping to Africa, so that we may better support requestors from that continent without completely emptying our accounts on each one.
