Ummmm.....
Jul. 13th, 2004 08:08 pmSo, to qualify for a 90-day hardship deferment for student loans, I have to prove my income by attaching two paycheck stubs from within the last two months.
Apparently, they haven't considered the possibility that some people who are unable to make payments on their student loans MIGHT NOT CURRENTLY HAVE AN INCOME!
So, now what?

Date: 2004-07-15 12:39 am (UTC)Fortunately, with so many people defaulting these days, they're desperate, and it looks like my consolidation has already been approved, so I'll just be paying them directly instead of worrying about a few payments to the original lenders, first, though I may end of having to pay them each a few hundred dollars later at some point...
The nice thing about the new plan is that I'll be out of default immediately, and since almost my entire crappy credit rating is due to student loans, I'll have stellar credit again in a matter of months, and can therefore once again be a target for massive advertising and identity theft....
well, I suppose it creates jobs
Date: 2004-07-14 04:15 pm (UTC)Not having the greatest faith in the system, I also printed out the paper forms, filled them out and mailed them in with photocopies of my unemployment check as "documentation of my unemployment". I'm imagining that if you are not even receiving unemployment, that you qualify even more than I do.
I did however have to talk to three different nice men with strong accents before I was told what consitituted "documentation of my unemployment". A photocopy, mailed in with the forms.
So, be persistent and be prepared to have to make several phone calls.

Date: 2004-07-15 12:42 am (UTC)Actually, it just took one. One of the forms they kept sending me to sign was permission for them to contact the IRS and get W-2 information directly from them. So now they're happy, and have already processed the consolidation. (Will be finished in three to five days from today). Wow. That was easy. I guess a massively failing economy has some benefits after all....
