Well, here I am in my new apartment. I'm sitting on the floor eating a Subway sandwich, looking out at the lights of the city. Which contrast nicely with the darkness of the apartment. I don't know why I'm surprised, but PG&E did not turn the power on yesterday as they said they would. So I call them up and, of course, the business office is closed. So I call the emergency outage office which tells me that I have power already, they can see the service order to turn it on yesterday. I ask them then how come none of my lights will go on, so they ask me if I've checked the bulbs. The bulbs? I have four lights, six if you count the refrigerator and freezer. I doubt all the bulbs happened to burn out yesterday. Also, I plugged a computer into an outlet and it has no power. (Fortunately, it's a laptop, so I've got a couple hours of battery power left or I couldn't be writing this.) They then put me on hold for a while, come back and tell me that I wasn't here yesterday when they came out to turn on the power. I said, no, I wasn't, I was very specifically informed that I did not need to be here when they turned it on. Well, no, she finally admits, but they couldn't turn on the main breaker when I'm not here, since it's inside the apartment. Great, if it's just a breaker, I can handle that. So I go in search of the breaker switches. Find one. It's on. I flip it a couple of times just to make sure, but nothing happens. So I call back, talk to them some more, the new guy wants to know what time I'll be here tomorrow so they can send someone over to take a look. When I tell them I also smell gas, so I'm afraid to light any candles, they finally agree to send someone over. They'll be here, they tell me, within half an hour. That was 45 minutes ago. I have all the windows open, and I'm getting a headache from the strong gas smell coming from the kitchen.

But, ya know, I'm still happy to be here. And all the lights from the city below, and the airplanes and the stars above twinkling in the darkness sure are beautiful....
