While surfing around trying to find images for our Friday night (non-GwoB-related) room party at Norwescon, I came across this:

I finally learned how the radiators work, and what, exactly, the device labelled "sensor" senses.
Seems they are related. The radiators are easy enough. 0 is off, 5 is max. The confusion came in the fact that there're two knobs. The second (outer) one doesn't do anything at all. Which explains why it never seemed to do anything.
The "sensor" is the thermostat. When it gets to 67, the boiler shuts off. Yes, the boiler. For the whole building. Apparently, mine is the "cornerstone" apartment. So if I keep my windows open, which I usually do, the boiler goes, and everyone else in the building gets roasted. If I shut all my windows, and leave the computers on, my apartment gets warm, which shuts off the boiler, which freezes everyone else.

Bwhahahahaha. I Have The POWER!
