Naming stars
Sep. 15th, 2003 10:25 pmI'm glad somebody did a story on these scammers. These companies have been a bit of a pet peeve of mine for several years now.
I often wondered why, given the obvious demand for it, the IAU doesn't register names in exchange for money. They could use the cash to fund various astronomy educational programs.
But until they do, if you really must pay someone to name a star for you, let me know. You can send me the $44.95, and I'll send you a nice certificate with your star name, a chart showing you how to locate it, and, unlike the other companies, if you send me your location, and a description of the viewing conditions of your house (i.e., what directions are blocked by other houses, trees, etc., and how much light polution you have) I'll make sure to pick a star that you'll be able to locate with the naked eye from your home location.
Heck, I might as well go further: For $59.95, I'll include a notarized and beautifully framed certificate of authenticity, and for $69.95, I'll print the viewing chart on a T-shirt for you, your choice of size & color.
Remember, I am every bit as official as the International Star Registry, but I have prettier graphics.
