This is WRONG!
Dec. 20th, 2003 01:59 pmSo, somehow somebody uncovered a bunch of videotapes from one of our post-9/11 detention centers.
The tapes, unsurprisingly, showed systematic abuse of "detainees".
The fact that the prison officials claimed that all the tapes had been destroyed, never listed them on inventory, and didn't even tell investigators about the room they were kept in smacks of a coverup.
The bloodstained-covered American Flag T-shirt is the perfect symbol of what's wrong with this country since Bush's little coup.
I should also point out that the prisoners (I mean, "detainees") were not convicted criminals. In fact not a single one of them was even ever charged with any crime. OK? Got that? Not even CHARGED.
God DAMN this pisses me off.
This is not the America I grew up in.
It's getting worse.
The guards in question should not be given "counseling". Their prisoners were NOT criminals, but they are. There should be a complete investigation, and the guilty parties should not be "disciplined" they should not be "let go" and they sure as fuck should not be "counseled". They should be jailed, as the criminals they are. And that goes all the way to the top, including the prison officials who didn't take part in the systematic torture of inmates, but tried to cover it up, and the justice officials who instituted the policy of indefinite prison of innocent people.
Not a single one of these people was ever charged with a crime, but they were held, incommunicado, sometimes up to a couple of years. This is severely fucked up.
News like this comes out, and then people still call me paranoid when I point out that in Guantanamo bay, away from any judicial oversight at all, without any lawyers, without any videocameras, things might be as bad. Maybe, just perhaps, even worse?
The terrorists attacked us because they hate America. So we're going to destroy it for them, is that the message here?
I want a full investigation, and I want it loud, and open, and on the front pages of every newspaper in America. We shouldn't have to read about this stuff in the Washington Post only after the BBC shames them into printing it.
Oh, yeah, the complete story is here. Well, not the complete story. You have to search thousands of separate articles buried on the 27th page of most papers for that....
