We are not alone?

There are those who believe that life here began Out There...
It's looking like that may actually be the case, though not quite in the way Battlestar Galactica meant it. The theory is panspermia, and it's been around for a while, but recently has acquired more evidence to support it.

A astrobiologist (and just let me say quickly how cool it is to live in a world where that describes a real scientific discipline!) has found evidence of cyanobacteria - some of the simplest form of life - in a meteorite, discovered in France 140 years ago.
At first looking into the possibility of early contamination of earthly life, Richard Hoover doesn't think that's what happened: "The organic matter ... contains isotopes that absolutely could not be from terrestrial contamination,"
Some very, very cool and tremendously exciting stuff. If it turns out to be life (albeit fossilized life forms), it means life could be found anywhere. And if it can be found anywhere, it's very likely to be found everywhere.
Anyway, the entire article is here. Cool stuff.
