Speaking of Superman...
Jul. 9th, 2006 08:02 pmI was in the grocery store today, and while waiting in line, the two women behind me were discussing the new Superman movie. Neither of them had seen it yet, and had no intention of doing so (as the repeatedly stressed to each other) Well, one said she'd "watch it on video" because she didn't want to give them any money. I'm not quite sure how that works. I think the studio gets paid for video sales, too. But, I digress.
And what, you ask, was so objectionable about the new Superman movie that these two upstanding ladies couldn't bring themselves to watch it (except on video)? Why, the movie apparently didn't use Supes' famous tagline about fighting for Truth, Justice, and the American way. This was, of course, part of the Liberal Plot to destroy America, in this case by undermining Superman's patriotism. Oh, those horrible Hollywood Media Elite Liberals.
Yes, from the beginning of time (or, at least as long ago as either of them could remember), to the present, Superman has always fought for "Truth, Justice, and the American Way".
Except, of course, that he hasn't. I would guess they heard their opinion from either Bill O'Reilly, or one of the other Rush imitators. That particular phrase, however, wasn't heard until a 1946 radio program, the "Unity House" series, shortly after WWII. And what was this new radio evil that was against the American Way? It was racism, religious bigotry, and ultra-nationalism, in the form of the good ol' Ku Klux Klan. Ya know, those people convinced that, among other things, the Hollywood Media Elite Liberals are out to destroy America by undermining our beloved patriotic heroes.
Oh, yeah, and here's another fact that most people don't know: Superman is secretly Canadian.
Yep, the city of Metropolis is based on the city of Toronto. And the Daily Star (the original name of the Daily Planet) was the name of Toronoto's primary daily newspaper back in the 30s.
Fun, isn't it. But now that I know that Fox News (or whoever these ladies get their information from) is trying to denounce Superman, I think I'm definitely going to have to see it. Maybe tomorrow night when everyone else is watching Pirates.
