So, about a week or so ago, someone posted this to a few file-sharing networks. Labelled simply "Session 416", it had no explanation of where the film clip came from - no link to any product, nothing.

Kinda cool - a bit of viral marketing for the film.

For those unfamiliar with the term, viral marketing is a term used for a particular kind of marketing campaign designed to generate discussion of your product, whatever it is, by creating some kind of minor mystery. The idea in this case is that some people find the video clip, post it other places, it spreads around, and people begin talking about it, asking each other what it is, and eventually it gets to someone who recognizes it and informs everyone who's been wondering that it's a clip about the movie Serenity. Presumably, all those people manipulated into talking about it then decide they need to see the movie that's caused so much discussion.

Kind of a cool idea, actually, I've always thought.

And people spread it around even more by posting it to their blogs and talking about how cool the idea is.

Er, um, well, anyway....

There's a second clip out now that makes it a little more obvious where it's from: Session 1, which goes a long way toward explaining where River Tam's character comes from. Kinda sad seeing how she started, for those who've watched the series and saw what happened to her later...

Anyway, viral marketing isn't a new concept, and it predates the internet by a good amount. The Simpsons did an episode about it way back when, when Lisa found an unknown skeleton on a class field trip that everyone thought must be an angel skeleton. The most famous example I can think of, sort of a proto-viral, is the old Burma Shave billboards, where they'd have four or five billboards along a highway that look like just a bit of poetry someone had put up, but always ended with the words "Burma Shave" a the end of the last board only.

But, if you're not familiar with it, get the DVD's - it's a cool show. The movie's out in September - and if you're already a fan, then above are a couple of links to some cool little extra tidbits :)
