Dec. 8th, 2005 09:06 pmOh, yeah, now I remember the other things I was gonna mention:
A while back, I don't remember where exactly, but probably while searching for Firely-related stuff, I came across mention of an anime movie called "Grave of the Fireflies." The review looked interesting, so I added it to my Netflix queue. It finally arrived a few days ago and I watched it last night. This is in a movie in a genre apparently known as "Japanese animated movies that don't involve giant robots, pokemon, schoolgirls, or tentacle monsters." Which is a larger genre than you might think from the movies that make it to America. It's the story of two orphans trying to make their way in post-WWII Japan. Making your way as an orphan, without a ration card, in post-WWII Japan was, apparently, not an easy task. It's a beautifully animated, moving story and depressing as all hell. Very, very, depressing. Especially since they give away the ending at the beginning, so you know what's going to happen.
Anyway, while I can certainly recommend the movie (sad though it is), I also wanted to mention that, on this DVD, were trailers for several other movies, one of which for a movie called "Pearl Harbor".Unfortunately, it wasn't available from Netflix. EDIT: It is now in my queue. The American title is "Pearl Harbor: The View From Japan".
Another movie that I really wanna get, but can't find anywhere, was made in Egypt in 1986, and translated into English as "Salah Al-Din and the Assassins". If anyone knows where to find, or already has, this movie, (It seems to be the kind of thing that several of my friends here would have) it would make a great Christmas present :) So would a link to it. It's not on Netflix, Amazon, or E-Bay.
In other news, we're planning a "Nerdathon" - gaming day fund-raiser for GWoB. Tentatively scheduled for December 30th in Eugene. I know it's kind of short notice, but come on down if you can. Role-playing and fun. I'll probably run my infamous (well, infamous at Con-Quest anyway :) (which has apparently been bought by Avalon games now and expanded into a multi-convention franchise, so maybe I'm not famous there anymore) "Campus Crusade for Cthulhu" game. I've run two sequels to it, but I think the original is still my favorite. It puts the players in the roles of the cultists, rather than the investigators, in a game based - very, very, loosely - on my old Nephilim campaign, and some of my experiences running the PRC at UOP) I've also, thanks to a reminder from
kingcadillac, thought about dusting off an idea I've had for a few years now, and run a D&D game based on the, dare I use the word again, infamous Eye of Argon, in which the PCs cross the blasphelemous Grignr the Barbarian as they attempt to capture for themselves that "scintillating, many fauceted scarlet emerald, a brilliant gem seeming to possess a life all of its own. a priceless gleaming stone, capable of domineering the wealth of conquering empires...the eye of argon." By the surly beard of mrifk, it shall be languid!
Of course, that would mean I'd have to actually read the whole thing again. While sober. A task much more daunting I assure you than the daunting stygian magjestic quest of the bulky shadowy barbarian himself. Ugh. It hurts just to type that much. Oh, yeah, this'll be fun :)

Date: 2005-12-09 04:34 am (UTC)Nerdathon? Intriguing. Find me a floor or pool table to sleep on and I'm there. Road trip! Can us non-gamer folks just get drunk and giggle ourselves silly in the corner - us and our +5 booze constitution and -10 wisdom skills?
