So, they are finally starting to build a replacement for the World Trade Center. A cowering hunk of ugly steel with a giant antenna on top so it can cheese its way into a claim of being the US's tallest building.

But what really gets me, is that construction is due to be completed sometime in 2012.

In other words, it will have taken us 11 years to rebuild it. For those counting, that's 3 years longer than it took us to get to the moon once we'd decided to do so.

The fucking "freedom tower" is a monstrosity. Its built like a concrete bunker...a permanent monument of fear. Instead of thumbing our noses and rebuilding, we are planning on cowering forever.

Yeah, one of my co-workers at A.G. Edwards, a Bush supporter at the time, had what I think was the best suggestion for what we should do: Rebuild it exactly the same, except 111 stories this time. I think that would have been the ultimate symbol of what America could be.

How many stories did it have originally?

Thats what I was thinking...rebuild it just like it was. Thats what they did in Dresden!

111 stories would be SWEET. Its even better with all the 11s associated with the attack.

A cowering hunk of ugly steel...is that a freudian slip?

Actually, it wasn't. That's what it looks like to me. It's only after you pointed it out that I realized how close to "towering" the word is. And yet, worlds apart in meaning :)
It's like it's hunched over, trying to duck or something, raising the big flagpole to deflect attention away from itself.
I mean, the bottom few stories are a concrete bunker, and the top few are a hollow facade. It's far shorter than the old one, but with an antenna mount on top so they can claim it's taller. Kinda symbolic of America these days - claiming to be standing tall when it's obvious to everyone who looks that it's not. "Monument to fear" indeed.

Healing time my friend.

Yeah, that was weak. Ha ha. It's a sort of not so and so funny at the same time!

You shall behold a building desingned by committee. It's the American way now.
