Home again - busy weekend
Apr. 21st, 2003 07:13 pmWell, I'm back from Norwescon. Fun weekend, though more intense than most cons I've been to since this is the first one I've actually been working at.
reynard52 and
meisha and H from Colorado joined me in running a table to support Geeks Without Borders. Great weekend, though thoroughly exhausting. On the way up, Thursday, I called our IRS agent to see if his boss has approved our 501(c)3. She had. We are now officially tax-deductible, and will receive our letter in 2-3 weeks! Yay!
Friday night, I joined with my friend E from Sac in running the Retleb party. On the way back, we decided we'd run that joke into the ground and plan on rebuilding the Belter bar for Orycon.
From 9-6 on Friday and Saturday we ran the GWoB table. Got lots of interest, met lots of people who were really excited about the whole thing. Including one guy who runs an orgy that promotes a software package for running hospitals that he's been trying to get into developing countries, and got lots of advice about other fundraising ideas from other people who run various other ors. Had no idea there were so many charities in fandom, including the Klingon's "Save the Wolves" foundation. Way cool. Lots to do this coming week, including getting ahold of United Way's book about grantwriting (complete with lists of hundreds of organizations that give grants.)
Saturday night was the Geeks Without Borders room party, which proved very popular and raised quite a bit of money. Aside from the normal donation jar, we had two buckets out, and people could vote on whether I stripped at midnight or kept my clothes on. The final count was $32 to $23. And T and
amritarosa drove up from Portland for that.
Overall, we made $243 for GWoB, and made lots of contacts which may turn out to be even more valuable.
Got sick the next day, I thought at first from bad meat at breakfast, but now seems more like a bad cold. But, hell, it was worth it. Had a great time, got great news, met good people, and made some money for GWoB. But now, I'm off to find some dinner, and then, I think, to bed!
