Headache finally going away...
May. 29th, 2003 12:47 pmSo the massive headache that's laid me out for the last couple of days is finally fading. Got, I hate migraines. It's almost gone, though, now. Just a dull throbbing at the temples.
Continuing to pack. Picked up a big black marker at the hardware store yesterday, so I can mark my boxes. A lot of them, I don't think I'm going to unpack right away when I get to Eugene. Like my kitchen stuff, since there's a lot in the house I'm gonna be moving into already.. Problem with packing right now is, I don't really have that much stuff I don't use frequently. Which I'm pretty happy about, actually. I can't pack the telescope 'cuz I'm going to be using it next weekend. A couple of years ago, we found a helipad at a ranger station a few dozen miles East of Fulsom (on the way to Reno), that makes a great viewing location: high up, flat, and clear of trees nearby. So far, no helicopter has tried to land while we were there.
Packing up all my books. Sci-fi paperbacks in a box that I probably won't open any time soon. D&D stuff going into another box. The campaign I've been running about once a month finally finished the weekend before last. The usual: the characters rescued the Drow priestess, slew the princess, saved the king, then joined the rebellion against him, riding off into the sunset before he realized they were gone.
I was planning on auctioning off all my computer games on E-bay, but I think I'll wait til I get to Eugene, and then probably donate them to the GWoB auction. Not enough time to run an auction from here, what with my address about to change and all.
Got a big stack of books that I'm going to be returning to friends in Fulsom before I move. We borrow and lend each other books back and forth so much it's hard to keep track of who actually owns what at any given time. But I do remember that the Lensman series is Brent's, so I'll give it back before I go.
Talked to Verizon earlier. They turned off my cell phone service because I forgot to pay the bill. For three months. Oops. Took me an hour, and three calls, to find out what the total of my bill was. "Goddammit, I'm trying to give you money! Why are you making this so difficult for me, you bastards? Don't you want my money??!" Turned out, they want more than I'm willing to give them: To switch service entirely to my name, instead of this weird hybrid of me and Vodafone, they want me to sign a year-long extension on my contact. Which I'm not going to do. So I haven't had cell phone service all week, and realized I don't really miss it. So I think I'm gonna be landline-only when I get to Eugene.
Yesterday, while lying on my back on my floor moaning, I finally got up the energy to stick a DVD in the computer (which I have to give back tomorrow. Damn, that I *am* going to miss. But I might buy a new laptop for myself in June, depending on what price Vodafone stock's at on June 10th when all my options vest and I therefore cash them all in). Finally watched Minority Report, then realized that I've had it for almost two months now, and that for the price I'm paying for my DVD-by-mail service, I could just buy a new DVD every month, so I cancelled that, too.
I liked Minority report, though I would have changed the ending. I won't spoil it for you, but those who've seen it, and know me, should understand what I say when I would have had two bullets at the end. Which would have completely changed everything that happened to the world after the movie. I also loved how they handled the product placements in that movie. In the society they portrayed, advertising was everywhere, and very intrusive. Of course, the massive surveillance they used to customize advertising is coming, but it'll be done with biometric software not retina scans. And, of course, it will then be tapped into by law enforcement to find suspected criminals. If you don't believe our government wiould suborn a system like that to it's own ends, I'll point out that it only took them a few days to pervert the Amber Alert system to go from finding missing children to being used to shut down raves. Anyway, the product placements in Minority report were all there, just as with any other movie set in the present or near future, but with the exception of the Dr. Pepper ads, they were all portrayed as the annoyances they are. When he walks into the Gap and is assaulted by ads, you se that he just wants to get out of there as quickly as possible. (And not just because he's being chased by the cops). Same with the placement ads for Guiness and Lexus. I wonder if these companies understood the context before buying the placements?
Anyway, enough rambling for me today. Lots to do. Gonna cook, then clean, then go through my long and growing to-do list for GWoB (at least four people I have to contact, and lots of email and forums to go through. Hopefully, I'll be able to get to it all today. Then back up all my personal files from my laptop so I can give it back tomorrow....
