I was woken up last night around 4:30am by the thunderstorm. Lightning flashes every few seconds with the thunder half a second behind it. Rain pouring down beating against the roof. Thunder so loud it caused the house to shake.

I was quite happy laying there snug in my bed, three cats huddled in various spots of the comforter, the entire room lit up from time to time with lightning that seemed to be striking right outside my window. But then I realized that my windows were both open. Well, one is open, one is missing. So I finally got up, turned off and unplugged the computer to protect it from power surges, closed one window, ran into roommate Matt downstairs while I was looking for a sheet of plastic to cover the other. He found my second window and wedged it into place in the frame.

The room secure again, I decided to read a while. The lightning by now was already moving off, the interval between flash and clap having grown from less than half a second to over three seconds. Sat outside, protected slightly from the rain by the patio umbrella, reading Jules Verne amidst the thunder and the lightning and the rain, an appropriate accompaniment, until I was too wet and cold and shivering to continue.

And now it's all hot and sunny again. But at least we finally had a few hours of good weather. I can think of very few better ways to spend the wee hours of the morning than that. Could have used a cup of hot chocolate, though...
