So, while looking for something else on my computer, I came across this old post. From the .sig, I'm guessing it was from some old mailing list. The date on the file was June 7, 2002, but it may be older than that.

Apparently, this was the first time I'd come across Bill O'Reilly, who has since had an entire career rise, then fall again, since I first wrote this.

Amusing for historical reference, if nothing else.

Flipping through channels on the TV, I’ve come across this thing called “Bill O’Reilly vs. Hollywood”.
I’ve never actually seen his show before, but I’ve heard of him. Apparently, a self-described “conservative journalist” – though this was more of a talk show than a news show. Perhaps it was just the subject matter, his normal show may be more newsworthy. But, if his normal shtick is interviewing celebrities, then I doubt it. He keeps referring to himself as a “responsible journalist” – but he comes across much more as Anyway, this is pretty funny. First he talks about how many celebrities banded together to defeat “good legislation that would have kept sex and violence away from children” (discussing a bill that would have limited content in TV shows) then less than five minutes later claims he “never spins”.
Next, he goes after William Baldwin because his brother Alek won’t come on his show. When William points out that it doesn’t mean anything if someone won’t do the show, other than that they don’t want to come on their show, he does a voice-over (after William left – there’s more of that “balanced journalism” he talks about!) claiming that since Alek once referred to “those fascists on Fox” that he is “attacking” Bill, therefore does *not* have the right to “run and hide” from his show and “not let [Bill] have a chance to respond”. It’s a good thing that he doesn’t just want famous people to come on his show so people will tune in to watch them (kind of like how I’m watching only because the ad said that Jon Stewart was going to be on!)

Now Jon Stewart is on and bill is whining that Cher won’t talk to him, either. Earlier, William asked him why he thinks he has a *right* to have people come on his show and add to his ratings. He didn’t answer him until after he was gone, in voiceover narration. That’s just plain funny! He can’t get Alek, so he gets William, and can’t even handle him! He

Now he just cut off Jon Stewart’s comments when, after Bill complained about Ellen Degeneres’ sexuality being too “in your face”:
Jon: “It’s hard for someone who’s sexuality is not the mainstream to discuss in a normal chit-chat way their sexuality. Or not even their sexuality. Their relationship.”
Bill: “You can be discreet…”
Jon: “…but why should their sexual flamboyance be an issue when, my God, in Hollywood, flamboyance is currency?”
I really would have liked to hear what he said next, but Bill “I don’t spin” O’Reilly thought it was necessary to replace his next few lines with his own voiceover in order to change the subject.

He closed by commenting that since nobody in Hollywood is openly pro-life, they must be abusing their power of celebrity, or something like that. He did earlier mention that there are conservatives, using Arnold Schwarzenegger and Charleton Heston as examples, but didn’t dwell on them since his main point is how terrible it is that so many celebrities champion liberal causes.

His closing remarks were one last whine about people who won’t come on his show: “If a famous person is unwilling to answer questions about a statement they made publicly, that’s abuse of power, so beware.”

The whining and the double-speak were almost overwhelming! No, he’s no Rush Limbaugh, but really, is this the best the conservatives have to offer?
