Today, my mother passed away, after a long battle with breast cancer.
She was first diagnosed several years ago. After a regimen of chemo and radiation, she was cancer-free at all of her checkups for two years. She was a proud Breast Cancer Survivor, taking part in many of the awareness events from parades to dragon boat races.
Unfortunately, a year ago, it came back. And spread. And metasticized. After evaluations, the doctors told her she had three to six months to live.
She set about managing her affairs - including documenting what she wanted at the funeral, what to do when she was no longer able to articulate her decisions, what measures could be taken to prolong her life, and which could not.
She went on hospice a little over a week ago. She spent the last week and a half of her life surrounded by loved ones, with constant visits from friends and families. She got to say good-bye to just about everyone before she went.
At 8:40 this morning, she passed away in her own living room, surrounded by her most immediate family, including me.
She was a compassionate woman who touched a lot of lives while she was in this world. Those lives have touched other lives, and those yet more. The ripples of her passing through this world will be felt for generations to come.
