Back from OryCon!
Nov. 16th, 2003 09:08 pmSorry if this is a little incoherent - I had a great time, and still haven't fully recovered!
As mentioned previously, I spent this weekend at OryCon. If I'm counting right, it was my tenth time there. This was the first time I went there to promote Geeks Without Borders, though. We had a fan table Friday and Saturday, and a room party Saturday night. I was a little disappointed at the fan table - we raised maybe a hundred dollars during the two days we ran it, compared to the nearly $300 at Norwescon. Also, there was a lot of dead time when nobody was at the table. At Norwescon, we had a pretty constant crowd, and could barely keep up with them. We did meet quite a few people, and a lot of them said they, or even better their companies, had extra computers or parts they could donate. We'll see over the next few days, I suppose, how
any of that pans out. (In the past, I've noticed a lot more people tell us they have stuff they'd love to give us than actually give us stuff. It doesn't really bother me, as I'd rather see people over-excited at what we're doing and promising more than they can actually deliver than just apathetic to the whole thing and not give us anything.
A lot of people tossed money in our jar, especially at the room party, where we raised around another $100 or so (I haven't counted it yet.)
Due to the lateness of the hour (the room party went until 4am!) and the dissapointment of the success of the table, we decided not to run it on Sunday (it would have been only a few hours anyway) and left early (sorry,
amritarosa and
solis93 (I hope you got my voicemail!) that we weren't able to see you Sunday! We'll definitely have to hook up soon, though! Coffee at the Cow, or something.
We left about 5am, and got home about 8am. Although falling asleep in the car, it took me almost an hour to get to sleep once I got home, so I slept from about 9am to 6pm. Dark when I woke up. I hate that. Still feeling pretty burnt out, though that may be because, as it just occured to me, I have had no food yet today at all. I think I'll have to go fix that soon.
Overall, I did have a great time at OryCon. The people who did stop by the table were all really cool and excited about what we were doing. The biggest difference, I think, from Norwescon is that the table, like all the fan tables, were out of the way - at Norwescon, they were along a major hall that people would be walking back and forth along all day. At OryCon, they were behind the stairway that led down to the gaming room and the art show, and even if you were heading down there (or back up from there), you'd still have to go a bit out of the way to walk by the tables.
Friday night, I helped run the Belter party, and it was great to see it again this year. Retleb was fun, but I missed the old Belter party, and it was good to see it again. For Norwescon, I'll finish the window, so we can re-open the real bar, and be very very cool!
The GWoB party was a blast, too - one of the more popular room parties around, which is always cool. Most people were pretty cool. I only thought about kicking one person out, but she left before she annoyed me that much - some self-important chick in a cat suit, with a friend wearing the Anarchist Cheerleader costume from Hot Topic who kept getting angry at people who didn't know where she had last left her pompoms.
I was very happily surprised at all our friends who showed up! Thanks for coming, you all!
31seel for coming out, and for tending bar allowing me to mingle more, and for volunteering to help us run the table on Sunday, even though we flaked out before you had the chance. And T, for playing drums and jamming with the giant chicken, and drawing the attention of half the hotel to our party! And
goreangel for coming out, with D, and talking up GWoB at our party, as well as the others, (and the ever-swapping balconies) and to D. for the same thing (though you won't see this since you don't blog :-). And to
rhonan who we met at Norwescon, for your contributions to the party, and enthusiasm, and for coming down and hanging out at the party. It was great to see you again! ("We are GWoB. We are Good.") And
gallows_brother - it was great to see you again even if I didn't get the chance to talk to you as long as I'd've liked! And Brett And Michelle for coming, and you guys really should get a blog to so you'd see this kind of thing!
And welcome new friend from this con,
scifigal and thanks for coming, and see, I did remember your lj username after all! (And, if you remember mine, you'll see this :-)
I'll definitely be at OryCon again next year, running both the Belter party on Friday night, and the GWoB party on Saturday night, though I don't think we'll have a fan table at OryCon next year - instead I'll just spend the days at various panels and hanging out at hospitality and do con stuff (cuz I really missed that this year), and just do the room party.
I'm also now seriously thinking of doing RadCon in February. We got along great with the concom who were running their own party downstairs from us, and it looks like fun. If we do, I think we'll do the same thing - con during the day, and just have a room party for GWoB in the night (maybe both Friday and Saturday nights...)
And now, I'm gonna go find some food.
