Do I want to move to Saint Louis, MO?

Nearing the end of my money, I am attempting to re-enter the paid job market. I keep getting these emails from various recruiters around the country. No offers yet, but some of them sound promising. Two in Orange county - one of whom wrote the job description based on my resume after they were having some problems and one of my old co-workers from Vodafone who works there now told his manager "hey, you know, back at Vodafone we had a guy whose specific job it was to take care of this kind of thing..." They called me, I sent them my new resume, and I haven't heard from them since.

Ditto with the other place where the recruiter seemed excited, even telling me I should be asking for more than I was, and helped me re-write my resume. A week and a half later, and he's not returning my phone calls. Weird.

Another one, I was invited to apply by an old co-worker of mine from Intel. Apparently, a whole mess of 'em quit in protest of Intel refusing to stand up for Mike Hawash when he was arrested from their premises and held illegally as part of Ashcroft's nationwide Arab Roundup. Some of them founded a company in Portland, and my friend went to work for it later. I think this one's my favorite, even though I don't yet know what the company does, or how much they pay, or whether they're going to actually hire somebody this year or not.

Heard today from a recruiter in St. Louis. It doesn't pay nearly as much as the others, but according to the salary calculator, the salary they're offering would be more than what Orange County is offering once you adjust for cost of living, as St. Louis is almost a cheap to live in as Eugene. Looks like I could rent a 1-bedroom apartment for around $400. And that's just what I found after five minutes of looking on-line.

Then, I got emails from Utah (they have software in Utah?) and Washington, DC (probably a dangerous place for me to live :) this afternoon. I have no idea where these people are finding my resume, or why they're suddenly all contacting me at once. Except for the last few days, I haven't applied for anything - it's just people who found me. Weird timing, too, as I hadn't heard from my friend from Intel for six months, and I haven't heard from the Orange County guy since I left Vodafone a year ago. And I haven't heard back yet at all from any of the places I've sent resumes to.

Maybe my resume sucks, or something. It's like they're all really excited and want to hire me until they see the resume. Hm.

The Orange County and St. Louis jobs are the two extremes of the range I'm looking at. St. Louis is much less responsibility - they're only looking for a ClearCase administrator, while OC is looking for an actual Software Configuration Manager. And, in fact, it is an actual management position. Despite the term "manager" in the title, SCM isn't usually management, though I do have some experience there.

The St. Louis one will do nothing for my career, and isn't anything I haven't done before, but with the reduced responsibility I'll be able to spend more time on things like GWoB and perhaps even have some semblance of a social life. The Orange County one will definitely be a challenge - up to 12 people reporting to me, as head of the SCM department. A much better career move, if I want to continue SCM as my career. Either place would be at least a one-year indenture, and I'd probably stay there for at least two, which would give me enough money to get out of debt, which'll be a nice thing. Then I can buy a house and get back into debt again....

Anyway, no idea what I'm gonna do yet. Of course, none of these places have actually made an offer or anything, so there's always that to consider...

YOU go where you WANT to go. Don't take just anything because you feel you have to. This is one of the few times when "If it feels right, it must be the right thing to do" actually applies. Don't worry about GWoB; I'll eat a barn before anything bad happens to it and I know you won't shirk your responsabilities to it. Frankly, you going somewhere might just be the shot in the arm that GWoB needs (*cough*network*cough*). St. Louis would be neat. But so'd SoCal, as [livejournal.com profile] docscarabus is there and we ALL miss him. I'd be wary of that $400 apartment; St. Louis has some pretty uncouth areas. [livejournal.com profile] metallumai lives there. She's SUPER sweet. You should ask her about the area!

St. Louis is ok- but Reynard's right- be aware of your neighborhoods.
